SURFACE PROTECTION
Procedures
Floor protection - lay tape down at the edge of the floor (use delicate tape for varnished or wooden floors) apply tape to where the baseboards and floor meet. go all around the room laying tape down until all the edges of the floor are protected with tape.
For more vigorous projects like demo work floors should be protected with Ram Board sheets and should be taped to the floor the same way as the rosin paper is applied in step 3
Next lay down rosin paper beginning with 1 wall and tape the rosin paper to the tape that is already that you put on the edge of the floors at the baseboard. Use a razor blade to cut rosin paper to the desired length as needed in order to fit the rosin paper in tight places. tape it down. do this all round the room until only the center of the floor is exposed. Next lay down more rosin paper to cover up the whole floor.
if you are protecting a carpet floor lay down and tape 1.5 mil painters plastic over rosin paper or carpet film to provide an extra layer of protection. Painters plastic or carpet film can also catch debris and dust better than rosin paper alone. Use a razor blade to cut plastic to desired sizes. This process can be performed on smooth cement areas, tile, linoleum as well as hard wood floors. always make sure you use the correct kind of tape. Be sure to clean the surface well enough so that the tape sticks.
Cover any furniture with painters plastic to protect from dust and paint drops.
The tape should also be applied to any fixtures, electronic devices such as smoke detectors, security alarm monitors and light fixtures.
Apply tape to any door handles and door hinges if necessary. to avoid getting paint on it while painting around them.
Remove all power switch and power outlet cover plates.
If there are surfaces where tape dosent stick but still requires protection like stone, or cemented areas apply spray adhesive and lay down masking paper over the surface. if it's on the ground you may also use peaces of card board if you'll be spraying.
On exterior projects any non maintenance surfaces that won't be painted will be protected using tape masking paper or 1.5 mil plastic this includes. Window glass, water gutters, roofing and concrete areas.
Windows should be draped or masked either with tape or masking liquid depending on how you will be painting them (spray or brush).

SURFACE PREP ON WALLS.
After every thing is protected properly the cleaning of any surface to be painted is required. You can't paint over grease and dirt. once the surface or wall is clean sanding should begin especially if the old paint is oil based or has a shine to it like satin, semigloss, or eggshell, sanding the shine off helps promote adhesion. after sanding is done you may apply primer if paint was oil based use an oil based primer, if its water based paint use regular water based primer, primer is required to add hide to the previous color and also promotes adhesion. after primer is applied and dry painting can begin.
